'Unspeakable' Becomes Only Canadian Series Included on
The New York Times' and The Hollywood Reporter's 'Best TV Shows of 2019' Lists
December, 2019: The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter have released their respective lists of the best homegrown and international TV shows of 2019. And of the hundreds of programs that aired across the globe this past year, Unspeakable has defied the odds by making the cut. The Canadian miniseries now finds itself listed alongside critically acclaimed television heavyweights Succession, Killing Eve, Mr. Robot, Fleabag, and Veep.
To date, Unspeakable has earned four award wins (including Best Dramatic Series) and 20 nominations.
Based on the book Bad Blood by Vic Parsons, Unspeakable chronicles how thousands of Canadians were needlessly infected with HIV and Hepatitis C through the country’s blood system. One of these victims was Unspeakable creator and executive producer Robert C. Cooper, who contracted Hepatitis C in his teens as a hemophiliac.
“We didn’t just want viewers to understand what happened with this scandal," says Cooper, who previously served as co-creator and executive producer of Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate Universe. "Above all, we wanted them to feel what it was like. You can never properly do justice to a real-life tragedy as complex, emotional, and awful as this. But as one of the few lucky survivors, I'm enormously grateful our team was given the opportunity to tell a small part of the story.”
The eight-episode miniseries was broadcast on CBC Television and SundanceTV in early 2019, and was produced by Cooper's independent production company, Mezo Entertainment.
